Key Directions

Developing and communicating knowledge to improve the provision of paid care services.

The complex and rapidly changing world of paid care raises many  new questions which inform our research.  Some questions arise because payment is being introduced where family and community relationships once presided.
  • Does paying for care affect the nature and quality of care provided?
  • How does paying for care affect the experiences of those who receive care?
  • What can we reasonably expect of paid carers?

Other questions arise because paid care may be organised in many ways – informally; through for-profit, not-for-profit or government organisations and through large bureaucracies or small community organisations.

  • How does the way paid care is organised affect the nature and quality of care provided?
  • What can be done to enhance the quality of paid care?
  • Who is willing to work as a paid carer, and what motivates them?
  • How can we meet future workforce needs in paid care?
  • What makes the work rewarding or unattractive?
